Earth Hour

Yesterday evening was a strange one for us. Usually the boys are in bed by 8:00 (occasionally 9:00 on the weekends if we're watching a movie) but last night we were out running late-night errands so that we could enjoy a quiet peaceful day today. So, we didn't even get home until Earth Hour was half way over. Although our lights had obviously been off the entire time, I felt we had missed out on the experience, so we allowed the boys to stay up until 10:00 and have a camp-out and snack before bed. They found this to be very exciting and thought the candlelight was beautiful. My oldest even suggested we save more energy by using sunlight by day and candlelight by night all the time! I thought this was a wonderful idea and something that we might start, as soon as I stock up on a few more candles! Ha, in case you're seeing some of the same ones in the pictures it's because I found that we were not very well prepared in the natural light area. I was barely able to find a lighter and matches and had to keep moving the few candles I have to whatever area of the room we were in. I was also unable to find a single flashlight and the boys' lantern batteries were dead. If anything, Earth Hour made me realize that we most definitely are not prepared for a power outage or natural disaster, and really need to stock up on a few things! Did anyone else celebrate Earth Hour last night? I would love to hear about what you did! Please share. :)

  1. What a lovely Earth Hour. We played games by candlelight while eating popcorn. It didn't seem like a very new experience though due to that horrible windstorm we had in Sept. of last year. Didn't you have outages up there? We were out for 5 nights and 6 days...it was rough b/c we have a septic tank which runs on electricity, so we didn't have water that entire time and no flushing toilet. It was a nightmare!

  2. Oh, I had almost forgotten about that already! Ours was only out for about a day and a half, but we were storing food for other people here. We did have a long outage while living in Franklin, TN after a tornado went through. But, that's a story for another time! :)

  3. I celebrated in true pregnant Heather style. I went to bed (yep..that early)! The only light in the house was from the TV, as my husband watched basketball. (in the dark, at least!)

  4. I so enjoyed the candlelight that I, too, thought... We MUST do this more often 'just because'! It felt so peaceful. I'm glad you all had a lovely experience. Me too.

  5. Sounds like fun. My brain apparently wasn't plugged in this weekend, so I missed Earth Hour entirely. Whoops! I love the idea of having an indoor camp out of sorts.

  6. I was out at a restaurant during Earth Hour, so didn't really participate... oh well. We try to be good about energy, using energy-efficient lightbulbs and all. We also have these magnet-powered flashlights that my mom-in-law gave us years ago-- you have to shake them really hard for a few minutes, which makes a magnet inside cross a coil with each shake and that somehow builds up electricity to power the flashlight! Kinda cool, and in a pinch you don't have to worry as much about batteries. =)

  7. We did. We lit candles, played a board game, and then the boys took a warm bubble bath (so much more fun in candlelight)...got into PJs, read some books, and went to bed! :)

  8. We had the grandparents down from upstairs (we share a duplex) and told stories around the kitchen table by candlelight. It was beautiful and oh, so relaxing! ...we're in the process of doing some research about candle emissions, though, because I'm not really sure how good they were for us or the environment. I'm really glad about how well earth hour went, though. I think we made the statement we intended to make.

  9. We celebrated late! Mostly we fought over burning the house down. ;) http://sugarboot.blogspot.com/2009/03/earth-hour.html
